How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on BreadboxPicks starts with one question: will this oven fit your counter, your pans and the way you cook?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the size and the door style

Toaster ovens differ in how they open and how much they hold. A French door oven opens with two doors, and a flip-up oven tucks its door up and out of the way.

We check the exact outside size and the inside space each maker lists, including whether a 9x13 pan or a 12-inch pizza fits. When your counter or cabinet limits the size, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at wattage, air fry and convection settings, the cooking functions, the racks and pans in the box, and how easy the crumb tray and walls are to clean. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like uneven browning, a loud fan or a coating that wears.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A big oven that's great for a family may score lower in a guide for a small kitchen.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Ovens also get new model codes, so we check each model name before we write about it.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every oven we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. Toaster ovens get very hot, so follow its clearance, cleaning and use steps.
